Tune-ups for the 21st Century

The only constant is change and with automobiles it is no different. Times are changing….vehicles are changing. Among the most critical changes in today’s automotive industry is the perception of a”tune-up.” Ask ten car owners their definition of chances and a tune-up are there will be ten different answers. The classic”tune-up” was once the guts of the automotive business, and contrary to your beliefs, today’s modern vehicles still require tune-ups to stay them performing within the best levels. The tune-up was historically related to the regular replacement of essential mechanism parts like spark plugs and ignition issues, together with some necessary adjustments to help”tune” the engine. As time progressed pressure to improve fuel economy and reduce emissions drove the car makers to adopt electronics and to eliminate many of the ignition issues in the 1970s, and then with the carburetor in the middle 1980s. These changes resulted in less of a need for adjustment and replacement of ignition and fuel system components that always seemed to be growing in number. As the speed of technology quickened, the processes needed to execute a standard tune-up shifted drastically. Fuel systems and ignition components that are engineered to the highest standards are installed in every new vehicle on the road. All of this is controlled by onboard computers that regulate off of the transmission and engine functions.  Things that were once managed automatically are controlled electronically throughout the widespread use of built-in engineering. As vehicles have evolved, so too has the definition of a tune-up. The Car Care Council has introduced what they call the 21st Century Tune-up to address the changing needs of modern vehicles. This program is created to assist re-define and educate motorists on what a tune-up should encompass on today’s modern vehicles. “there’s a misconception that today’s modern vehicles don’t need tune-ups because they never break down, but that won’t accurate,” said Rich White, administrator of the Car Care Council. “If you’re at work and your computer goes down, you cannot get work done. It is the same, along with your vehicle. just in case the car isn’t being properly maintained, you are not visiting get where you would like to travel.” As a part of the 21st Century Tune-up on today’s modern vehicles, the subsequent systems should be checked for proper function:
  • Emissions systems
  • Ignition components
  • Fuel system
  • Electrical system (battery, charging and starting)
  • Engine Control Module (including onboard diagnostic (OBD2) tests )

Vehicle owners request tune-ups to induce a variety of reasons, including performance, maintaining credibility, planning a vacation, preparing or because they’re committing the auto to some relative or friend. To help ensure decent performance, fuel economics, and emissions, the Car Care Council also urges that motorists take the time necessary to become aware of their automobile from every aspect. Study the owner’s manual to become ultimately at home with the operation of all systems. Pay close attention to the indicator lights and tools.
